Barge Sinking Threatens Alaska Fertilizer Supply

The Kenai barge sank in the Gulf of Alaska with 9 300 tons of liquid an hydrous ammonia and 4 500 tons of urea pellets on board. The ship connected Kenai Alaska to Portland Oregon carrying fertilizer for Northwest farms and its loss could strain reserve stocks and Eastern Washington crops.

Indians Claim Fight Victory

Kootenai Indians of North Idaho say they are gaining in their bid to regain ancestral lands. Spokesman Doug Wheaton reports solid commitments of more than 200000 dollars in federal money, including 150000 for road repairs, 18000 for economic development, and 100000 for community building at Bonners Ferry, while demanding 120000 acres be returned.
