Attorney General Finds Church Use Of School Buildings Legal

Idaho Attorney General's Office says church use of school buildings can be legal if fair and equitable rental fees are charged. Bishop Treinen to Visit St. Joseph’s Here

Bishop Sylvester Treinen will visit St. Joseph’s Church in Sandpoint on Friday October 15 for an open meeting at 7 30 p.m. He will speak to parishioners and answer questions as part of a planned Northern Idaho parish visitation. A reception hosted by the Altar Society will follow in the parish hall.

Elks Fall Dance Planned at Sandpoint Lodge

The Sandpoint Elks announce a fall dance with a buffet dinner from 7 to 8 30 p m and dancing from 9 p m to 1 a m at the Elks Lodge. Ted Crabb Trio provides music. turkey dinner costs 2 dollars per person, while the dance is free. Exalted Ruler Robert Johnson urges all members and their ladies to attend.

Overcrowding At Kootenai Prompts School Board Talk

District 82 Superintendent E Wayne Likens told trustees that overcrowded classrooms exist with up to 37 students per room at Kootenai and Northside. He proposed adding teaching aides or using an empty Kootenai classroom, possibly hiring another teacher with available funds. He suggested allowing Northside parents to send their children to Kootenai for the assigned grade.

Two Area High Schools Plan Junker Recycling Drive

Newport and Priest River high schools organize phase one to obtain 400 legal releases for derelict autos by October 18. If met, phase two shifts released junkers to marshalling areas for shredding by American Auto Shredding Co. in Spokane and Bethlehem Steel in Seattle, with $1 per car body for each school's ASB.

Salmon River Mountain Man Dies At 81

Frank Lantz, 81, a loner who lived at Lantz Bar in the Salmon River Breaks since 1954, died Tuesday in his isolated Idaho cabin after illness. He first arrived in 1916, prospected in 1925, turned his land over to the forest service, and was to be buried in Corvallis, Montana, after a Hamilton funeral.

Third Attempt To Derail Freight Train Reported At Mt View Crossing

Burlington Northern official Frank Turner reported an apparent derailment attempt at Mt View crossing between 8 50 p m and 10 40 p m Wednesday. A broken lock on a rail switching device was used to set a derailment risk, and the lock was placed nearby. The Bonner County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. this is alleged to be the third such incident in a week at the same site.

Kansas Physician Wins Nobel Prize in Medicine

Dr. Earl Wilbur Sutherland of Vanderbilt University Medical School wins the 1971 Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries on hormone action and cyclic AMP. He will receive 90,000 dollars and is praised for advancing diagnostic medicine and potential therapies. He previously earned the Lasker Award for hormones research.

Dr Lee Stokes state water pollution chief outlined a timetable to cut Coeur d Alene River pollution by 80 percent by December 1972. The plan targets Bunker Hill Mining Co Kellogg with a complaint. zinc discharges would be limited to 325 pounds daily, a level stated as tolerable to aquatic life.
