Idaho state Senator Kermit Kiebert of Hope hails Congress approved National Forest legislation affecting timber sales. The bill increases local payments from timber revenues, adjusts Monongahela Decision effects, and allows continued wood products employment.
Bonner County Education Association and School District negotiating teams meet at 7 30 p m in the Farming School cafeteria to review the report from a three man board. The state panel met with negotiators on September 18 to end a dispute over a refused salary increase in the 76 contract talks.
Walter J. Behneswohld, 70, of 901 Ontario St Sandpoint, was arrested for driving while intoxicated after the pickup he drove failed to make a curve on state highway 200 near Kootenai. His 1970 Chevrolet truck sustained 300 in damage, losing a camper shell and ending on a railroad embankment.
Twin Falls County Prosecuting Attorney William Hollifield filed a felony charge against Sheriff Paul Corder amid questions from Idaho Attorney General Wayne Kidwell who opposed the move noting lack of evidence of criminal intent. Kidwell cited a long standing practice of holding public funds but said turnover could not prove theft or embezzlement. The investigation found a violation of misdeeds in keeping records of disbursements, a report will go to Hollifield next week. Corder expected to turn himself in Tuesday.
Fair today in Sandpoint with variable winds 5 to 15 mph. Rain is not expected through Tuesday. Highs near 70 today, around 65 Tuesday. Overnight lows around 40 both nights.
A lost hunter, Bryan Tolbert of Sagle, was found safe and tired early Monday on High Drive above Allen Road near Twin Lakes after an all night CB radio search. Tolbert described getting separated at dusk Sunday, lighting a fire, and being found at 5 30 am when a flare guided rescuers Bill Timblin and Jack Russell led to his recovery.
Two minor stepbrothers on a Kawasaki 90 were in a head on crash with a 1974 Plymouth on Garfield Bay Road at 10 10 am. Gene Mistelske 13 and Tracy Fort 12 sustained multiple injuries and were hospitalized. An accompanying rider, Joseph Thomas Wilcoxson 28, suffered a collapsed lung after a separate crash on Garfield Bay Road. A separate city beach collision involved Janet Ann Williams 18 and Melvin Lee Williams 19 in two different cars, with minor damages recorded.
Sandpoint city council meets at 730 pm in a special session to choose a replacement for late Mayor Les Brown who died September 28. Three candidates are before the council including Steve Klatt Ed Eitzman and Archie Yager with other names possible tonight before the regular meeting. The council aims to appoint before tomorrow night’s session and a ruling on who presides over meetings may hinge on council authority.
