Council selects Ed Eitzman as mayor by a 4 to 2 vote amid debate over proper procedure. Critics argue he cannot hold dual roles, while Eitzman promises to focus on communication and the 1977 comprehensive plan.
State Senator William Day of Spokane has not requested a court appearance to answer charges of soliciting a prostitute in downtown Spokane. Day, 52, denies soliciting and says he was at a bar near Main Street visiting his hospitalized mother when approached by a decoy. If he does not appear or forfeit bond by 96 hours, a warrant could be issued. Day is a former House Speaker running for a third term. Sacred Heart Hospital lists his 81 year old mother Laura Day in very serious condition after a coma.
Bonner County teachers reject a school board offer for full health insurance and oppose a proposed $24.35 monthly cost per employee. The BCEA backs an override levy to fund salary increases. the board worries about year to year funding and a deficit if benefits rise again. A follow up session is planned at Farmin School as negotiations continue.
The Sandpoint City Council will meet in regular session tonight at 8 pm in observance of Columbus Day. The Bonner County Board of Trustees will also meet in regular session tonight at 8 pm.
At Nevada State Prison a steady and calm situation was reported after a riot left two inmates dead and 12 injured. All inmates in the maximum security unit were locked in cells, while at the medium security facility whites and blacks were segregated in living areas for 30 days after talks brokered by Warden Charles Wolff.
In Buckhannon West Virginia Beverly Wolfe 33 of Baltimore held officers at bay for six hours firing about 10 shots from behind tombstones in Heavner Cemetery. Fog and night kept police from entering until daybreak teargas drove her from cover. A German Shepherd was found in her car. she refused to speak.
C G Roundsville aged 24 was arrested Sunday evening in Clark Fork for illegal possession and cultivation of marijuana. A search warrant by Judge Charles Harden led Clark Fork Police Chief Ron Dufore and a small team to Roundsville's home. he was released on a $300 bond pending a preliminary hearing. Residents can expect partial cloudiness north with dry, mild conditions through Wednesday.
