Supreme Court refuses to reconsider death penalty ruling

The Supreme Court declined to revisit its June 29 opinion declaring the death penalty cruel and unusual punishment. Georgia and Texas sought rehearings along with District Attorney Arlen Specter of Philadelphia, arguing the decision has broad implications and urging clearer limits on first degree murder cases and jury procedures.

Money Count Under Way For Spokane Activities Fund

In Spokane School District 81 money is being tallied from last Friday’s three football games at Joe Albi Stadium to reach about $100000 for the activities program. 19000 fans attended, and C Culver Smith, chairman of the activity fund committee, cautioned that counting will continue as receipts are checked from 61 outlets.

DUI Charged After Head-On Crash Near Way

Kenneth L. Bauman 42 of Sandpoint faces DUI charges after a Saturday collision on Five Mile Road five miles west of Way. Bauman’s car, in thick dust while following Mrs Bauman, struck a car driven by Rodney Newton 18 and a passenger Robbie Powell 18. Both vehicles totaled. Newton and Powell unharmed. Bauman also cited for suspended license and failure to license a truck.
