The leading business indicators fell 0.5 percent in October marking a second straight monthly decline. Officials expect slower growth in Q4 around 6 to 7 percent after a 13.2 percent third quarter GNP surge, with mixed signals about a sustained downturn.
A Boise report by Steven Berry of the Idaho Department of Employment finds that even with lower state and federal income taxes the purchasing power of Idaho workers declined sharply. Using a $7,000 salary, the study notes Idaho consumers could buy only half as much in 1974 as in 1956, with wage gains barely offsetting inflation despite tax cuts.
The pound opened at an all time low against the dollar in London as the dollar rose to seven week highs across Europe and Tokyo. Dealers cited strong U S trade figures and relief from New York City fears as supporting the dollar while the pound fluctuated around 2.02 dollars.
Idaho warden Richard Anderson says killer Carl Cletus Bowles spends 22 to 23 hours daily in a maximum security cell due to high escape risk. Bowles, serving three 25 year kidnapping sentences, faces life for murders in Oregon and Washington. He reads Idaho law books and requests code and newspapers, while exercising in a shared 20 by 200-foot walkway with others.
Idaho Beta Sigma Phi plans a 7 30 p m benefit at the Panida Theatre featuring 50 fashion models from The Four Seasons Myklebusts and footwear from The Bootery. Special acts include Phil Balch Patty Balch Mary Eginton Dave Evans and Lyn Evans. Proceeds aid the Bonner County Humane Society as it seeks land a building and funds for a Sandpoint animal shelter. Tickets for the Wednesday night event will be sold at the door.
Snow and ice covered most major Idaho routes with chains advised for mountain passes. Icy spots and broken or snow covered stretches identified on U S 95 U S 12 and several state highways while fog and drifting conditions noted near the Utah and Wyoming lines.
Twin Falls Idaho UPI County Assessor Ron Taylor urged legislators to enforce or repeal the liability insurance requirement for license plate purchase. He argued many drivers obtain insurance only to buy plates and then cancel, noting no enforcement to repossess plates when policies lapse.
UPI reports that countries given understandings to buy American farm goods see no hard supply guarantees. An administration official says the main offer is a commitment to run U S farms at full capacity, helping buyers obtain needed goods in the open market. Bell notes this is not a signed guarantee but policy aimed at strong production and open-market prices to spur output.
Tax Collector announces three December Saturdays open for payments. Treasurer Alice M Nelson says hours are 9 am to noon on December 6 and 13, and 9 am to 5 pm on December 20. December 20 is the tax payment deadline.
