Two Priest River youngsters suffer injuries from sledding mishaps after a light snowfall. Shanon Cork, 8, hits a rock and gets six stitches to the scalp. Jules Edwards, 10, breaks an arm and receives a cast. Both treated at Newport hospital.

Norman J. Basim 42 of Sandpoint died in the city jail after a night as a sleeper. Police linked a possible epileptic seizure or stroke with a head injury from banging his head at 4 15 a m and 5 30 a m when found dead. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause. Basim had lived at the Rowland Hotel and was originally from Newman Lake Washington. Authorities reported the call came at 12 30 a.m. and involved Sandpoint Police Chief George Elliot with support from Sheriff Howard Scott and Officer Art Bourassa. The physician was reportedly consulted and a sister in Newman Lake was not located. The autopsy will be performed by a pathologist.

Idaho health officials report localized hepatitis outbreaks in Wendell Grandview Emmett and Letha. Cases are isolated with no common carrier identified. Vaccinations are underway and emphasis is on hygiene and proper sewage treatment to curb spread. A Grandview area ranch operation is addressing a sewage disposal issue linked to the outbreak.
BOSE (UPD Douglas K Hartman 18 died Tuesday in a collision between a motorcycle and car at Maple Grove and Sunflower Lane. His death lifts Idaho traffic toll for the year to 296 four fewer than the same date last year. State police say Douglas and his brother Steven rode the motorcycle when it collided with a car driven by Marvin D Yensen 18 Boise. Officers say Yensen was making a left turn at the time of the crash.
In Boise two townships in St. Anthony filed with the BLM as the first step in claiming omitted lands along the Snake River. The meeting drew about 200 residents seeking clear title to land now claimed by the federal government.
Northern Idaho outlook from Friday through Sunday shows occasional snow Friday and Saturday with mostly cloudy skies Sunday. Temperatures range from a high of 35 today to 30 Thursday, lows around 20 tonight, with weekend highs 25 to 35 and lows 15 to 26.
The Sandpoint Junior Woman's Club will lead decorating the community Christmas tree with a tree donated by Pacific Power & Light and flood lights for illumination. Decorations will be homemade by local children, with a planning party set for December 5 after Santa’s visit at the Sandpoint Community Hall. The tree will stand at the foot of the unused bridge near Sprouse Reitz and Dalby’s Enco.

A three story Chicago apartment building above the La Marguerite cafe on 868 North Wabash burned rapidly. Nine people died including three children and eleven were injured as residents fled or jumped from windows. Firefighters fear the toll may rise as they search the ruins.
