Iva Burnstad Honored By Bonner County 4-H Leaders

The Bonner County 4-H Leaders Council paid tribute to retiring extension home economist Iva Burnstad at its Thursday night meeting. She received a council gift and a cake baked by Mrs. Don Lund Samuels. Burnstad, in Bonner County nine years, plans to retire officially on her birthday in January but leave in late December due to accumulated leave, said extension agent Ray Davis. Davis praised her county work and noted prior roles in Benewah County, Northern Lights in Sandpoint, and as an Army dietitian. About 40 attended as officers were elected: Burton Turner president, Mrs. William Westover vice president, and Mrs. Pascal Spade secretary-treasurer.

Considerable night and morning fog and low clouds through Friday with partly sunny afternoons. Little temperature change, precipitation around 10 percent through Friday. Highs near 45 and lows around 30 both days.

Ski season push at Schweitzer Basin prompts promotions

Traditional weekend opening nears as Schweitzer Basin boosts outreach. Sam Wormington and Wayne Parenteau spent days at Boise ski show and Sun Valley with four days in Spokane to promote shops and seasonal passes. Fairchild Air Force Base will renew and expand ticket assistance for personnel including their children. Voltze attended Mt. Hood ski seminar training 200 instructors, coordinating upcoming season exams and teaching methods.

North Side Firemen Aid 2 Homeowners

Northside Fire Department crews responded to two fires in rapid succession this week. At 8 a.m. Tuesday a truck stood by at the Jack Hickey residence near Oden for a chimney fire that was extinguished with no structural damage. On Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. two trucks and seven firefighters fought a roof fire at the R. G. Gilmore home near the Highway 95 drive-in theater. a metal stove pipe caused the blaze but it was put out with no major damage.

Gonzaga Opens Talks On Future Aims

Gonzaga University plans a two day outreach with students faculty administration parents and alumni to outline aims for the future. The initiative called Operation Influence was developed since mid summer under President Richard E Twohy SJ with key leaders guiding meetings. About 1300 letters were mailed to parents Spokane area alumni and local benefactors inviting participation.

County Names Two Committees For Snowmobiles And Rights

Bonner County commissioners appointed two committees to study snowmobile funds and human rights. A snowmobile fund plan requires 50 percent of vehicle fees, about five dollars per machine, to support county snowmobile development. The money committee lists Ralph Kerr, Clayton Perin, Frank Parsons, Tom Kinner, H H Lemburg, Chris Warren, Bill Gill, Paul Barker, Joe Swendig, and others from Priest River, Coolin, Nordman, and Sandpoint. The human rights panel, chaired by George Smith, includes Roger Gregory and Jerry Lindley with several residents. The boards will meet soon to elect officers and formalize procedures under state law.

Crew Wins Race To Swap Tanks For Apollo 12 Launch

CAPE KENNEDY UPD crews replaced a leaky hydrogen tank aboard Apollo 12 at Patrick AFB and prepared for a Friday liftoff. Richard Gordon Pete Conrad and Alan Bean praised the crew as they tested the replacement which allows a two day launch window before December 14.
