County Aims to End Memorial Field Lease in Sandpoint

Bonner County seeks termination of its lease on Memorial Field in Sandpoint to shed liability from the baseball and football complex. County Commissioner Jim Brockway told the Daily Bee that efforts continue after a War Memorial Board meeting. Prosecuting Attorney Lucinda Weiss reviewed the lease for termination options, noting no explicit termination clause except default on rent. Weiss also consulted Sandpoint City Attorney Roger Hanlon about annual maintenance costs. Memorial Field, created after World War II, honors Bonner County residents who died in service. The War Memorial Board includes county commissioners and representatives from American Legion, VFW, and World War I Barracks. Harold Anselmo said the county bears high costs for a well-kept memorial, and Brockway added the county would like to retain the memorial while eliminating the field. He cited liability insurance projected at 3,045 this year. The board also faces two lawsuits.
