Burns Sees Gloomy Economy Before Recovery This Year
Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns told the Senate Banking Committee that the economy looks gloomy with unemployment rising in coming months. He forecast improvement later this year as prices stabilize and the nation hovers between recession and inflation. The April unemployment rate reached 4.8 percent, up 1.3 million from before, while Standby public hiring was discussed and funding concerns noted. Nixon met advisers at the White House to review the slide in stocks and economic policy.
