Study Sees New Power From Deep Rock Heat
A Battelle Northwest led project in Richland Washington begins a study to generate electricity from heat deep in hot rock formations. Partners include American Oil Shale Corporation and the Atomic Energy Commission with aiding labs at Livermore and Las Vegas and Utah Power and Light. The plan uses rock crushing to form a deep cavity, pumps in water, creates superheated steam to drive a turbine, and aims for low cost power with reduced environmental impact.
