Man Handed Prison Term For Voluntary Manslaughter
Patrick R. Elkins, 26, was sentenced to ten years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter in District Court. Credit for time served since Feb. 23. Parole possible at the State Parole Board. The case involved the shotgun slaying of his stepfather Clifford Eugene House, 39, of Spirit Lake amid a family disturbance.

Lake Pend Oreille Inflow Peak Declared Temporary
The Lake Pend Oreille reached 2059.65 feet at 8 a.m. May 13 with inflow peaking at 91 600 cfs on May 9 and 84 500 cfs on May 12. The Corps said the peak is temporary due to cooler weather and inflows should fall, predicting a level near 2059.0 feet by May 20 as outflow remains high and inflows drop.

Deer Elk Hunt Permits Reduced By Commission Action
The Idaho Fish and Game Commission ordered an 850 permit cut for controlled deer hunts and 215 less elk hunts to aid herd rebuilding. They also revised closing dates to uniformity, shortening deer to 17 unit weeks and elk to 14. Increases in open hunts and bull-only elk hunts were adopted in eastern Idaho while cougar seasons were trimmed in two areas.
