SHS Girls Seek 300 For State Track Trip

Sandpoint High School seeks 300 to fund seven members including four runners and two coaches for the girls state track meet in Twin Falls. Seniors Debbie Chronic Claudia Ammerman and sophomores Gayla Chronic Helen Walkley make up the SHS 440 relay. Funds raised to date cover about a quarter of the cost. donations to Athletic Director Ken Beaudoin or Principal Dick Sodorff are welcome.

Lions Pledge $3500 To Reach The Sandpoint Lions Club

The Sandpoint Lions Club pledged 3500 over three years for a city beach or park project at the May 10 meeting. Progress reports on the July Fourth Celebration were received. The club also donated 25 to Sandpoint High School Girls Track for the state meet and backed Lion Jim Doak to represent the club at the State White House Conference on Aging in Boise May 28.

Water Rise Explained at Pend Oreille Dam

Ken Coffman, Alberi project engineer, describes Pend Oreille Lake inflow rising from 2055.24 feet at midnight May 3 to 2057.4 feet by May 7. He notes all Albeni Falls Dam gates were opened and the spillway flowing freely. Gates will not be restored until after the flood peak passes.

Sandpoint City Council Rejects County Proposals

Sandpoint City Council Monday rejected a county plan to transfer administration of old fair grounds and city park, urging a clear title search and arbitration. The council also refused a county proposal for using the city landfill until a county site is chosen, requiring explicit dumping rights protections before any mutual use.

State land board to lease Challis area for bighorn habitat

The Idaho State Land Board rejected sale of 640 acres northeast of Challis and approved leasing it to the Fish and Game Department for 180 dollars yearly to favor a bighorn sheep habitat. The board also approved a joint management plan with Kaniksu National Forest for the Selkirk Crest area and other land actions including sale approvals and a one year sand and gravel lease on the Kootenai River bed.

Sandpoint Rider Hurt On Sawdust Trail Climb

Bruce Johnson, 19, of Sandpoint, sustained minor injuries when his motorcycle went airborne about 25 feet while attempting to crest a sawdust pile on Michigan Street. Officer Sam Batt filed the accident report noting the pile imitates hill climb terrain used by local riders.

Publishers Fight Postal Increase

Washington UPI. The U.S. Postal Service won court approval for a temporary one third rate hike effective Sunday despite ongoing legal challenges from publishers. Judge Bryant denied a preliminary injunction, with an appeal planned.
