Priest River Man Charged After High Speed Escape
Eugene R. Hedlund, 34, of Priest River, was arrested 15 miles north of Spokane after a 95 mph chase in a stolen pickup. He had earlier escaped from Priest River City Jail where he faced kidnapping and forcible rape charges after allegedly abducting a Spirit Lake woman at gunpoint. He stole two revolvers from the jail, held Willie Hoop at gunpoint, tore out a telephone, then fled toward Washington before his capture. Hedlund, a Lasswell Feed Store manager since 1970, waived extradition and will be sent to Bonner County.

Still Hope For Trapped Coal Miners
In NEMACOLIN Pennsylvania two miners Richard Randolph 63 and Charles Gibson Sr 64 remain trapped 300 feet below ground after a mine fire. Rescue teams report atmospheric and temperature conditions could support life if they are barricaded. Air samples and temperature readings were sent to a Pittsburgh laboratory for analysis.
