Fire destroys new Cocolalla home and most belongings

Investigating Officer Jerry James reports a weekend blaze in a newly built Cocolalla house started by a fire in a chimney crack. The fire, used to dry the damp building used for furniture storage, destroyed the home and over half the Tarpley family’s personal items with no injuries reported. Forest Service response was unavailable and no fire equipment was in service.

Munson Addresses Youth Press Freedoms at Idaho Conference

J F Munson told Sandpoint High School journalists that press freedom and civic duty go hand in hand. He praised eight students who started an underground paper and urged students to use freedom responsibly as elders and students learn from their errors. Robert W Chandler of the Bend Bulletin warned against hostile rhetoric while defending frank journalism.

Idaho Allows Wine Sales In Groceries On County Option

Governor Cecil D. Andrus signed a bill permitting the sale of table wines in grocery stores on a county option basis. The measure defines table wines as non fortified wines up to 14 percent alcohol and becomes effective July 1. It requires county commissioners to issue licenses or voters to approve via election. The signing also included bills on land exchanges, inmate furloughs for family illness, cottage site sanitary standards, civil defense consolidation, a tort claims act, and college delegate rights to state conventions.

SHS Cedar Post Earns Superior Rating At Idaho Conference

Sandpoint High School's Cedar Post earned an All-State Superior rating at the University of Idaho press conference last weekend. It was one of six printed papers awarded superior. the staff won five other awards and placed highly in editorial and feature writing.

Miss Sandpoint Contestants Karla and Sandra Rainey

Karla, eight years violinist and choir member, performs Close to You at the Miss Sandpoint Pageant on April 10. She is a high school senior at Sandpoint High, sponsor Beta Sigma Phi, aims to be a language teacher, and attends Eastern Washington State College after high school. Sandra Rainey, senior, pianist, speaks Spanish and French, co leads the Foreign Language Club, plans to study at the University of Idaho and in France, sponsored by Sandpoint Kiwanis, and wishes a teaching career.
