Police Chief Larry Sterling orders a crackdown after broken glass and injuries at City Beach. The city bans beer in public parks and streets with up to six months jail or $300 fine. minors face juvenile detention.
Governor John V. Evans and his wife Lola spent a weekend in Sandpoint for a brief vacation. About 30 locals joined an informal discussion at Edgewater Lodge to raise drought and state concerns. The governor dined at the lodge, then fished Sunday on Lake Pend Oreille with Pete Thompson. they returned empty handed. He did not give formal speeches and enjoyed a relaxed Panhandle summer.
Bonner County school trustees tentatively approved a new salary schedule for teachers with a $300 base pay increase. In a special meeting the BCEA salary committee helped determine budget allocation and final contract terms will be signed in the fall. The plan rewards longer tenure and aims to reduce turnover, with an estimated $230,000 total raise. The final schedule mirrors BCEA’s winter proposal though teachers sought $9,400 base pay and the schedule is above the initial counter offer.
Sandpoint police investigate an early morning break in at Bi Rite Drugstore. A considerable amount of drugs was stolen after entry through a rear door near 3 30 a m Monday. Several other offices in the building were rifled but no other items reported missing. No arrests have been made.
Alvin W. Reid of Sandpoint faced trespassing and assault with a deadly weapon charges after a reported gunfire outside Wayne Parke's home in Kootenai. No injuries were reported. Law officers responded after Mrs. Parke found Reid inside and later heard shots. Bail set at $500 by Judge Ralph Mills.
Early Sunday two motorists faced charges and brief detentions near City Beach. Steven A Swinford of Spokane was arrested around 1 a.m. for inattentive driving and posted 75 dollar bond. Fred L Gendel of Daytona Beach was cited for speeding at about 6:15 a.m. and released after posting 25 dollar bond.
Public Works superintendent Jack Leckner urges voluntary conservation as summertime water consumption nears 3.5 million gallons per day. Citizens are asked to limit lawn and garden sprinkling until after 6 p.m., with the Daily Bee renewing its gauge on water use conditions and tips on page 3.
A 16 year old boy Andy Zinmer of Wisconsin will be charged with arson and 42 counts of manslaughter after a jail fire killed 34 prisoners and visitors at the Maury County jail in Columbia Tennessee during visiting hours. He allegedly started the blaze with a cigarette from a visiting prisoner.
The Lions Club stages a yearly “kangaroo court” on Independence Day eve. Citizens claiming innocence find themselves jailed and fined. a Ford Maverick drawing and a city beach barbecue are part of the event. Lions also write parking tickets for a day and offer to dismiss them if drivers buy a new car ticket.
About 30 United Nations diplomats and families travel by motor home to Farragut State Park Locust Grove arriving around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. They will stay overnight, then depart for Montana Wednesday morning marking the first for the summer and the first Northern Idaho visit in years.
East German passenger train collided with a freight near Frankfurt on the Oder killing at least 29 people and injuring seven. Fire erupted from a fuel tanker, rescuers used cranes and torches, and a government commission led by Otto Arndt began an investigation. Survivors were moved to local centers and buses as rescue operations continued.
Chicago police investigated the weekend theft of film producer Mike Todd’s cremated remains from a grave. They ruled out vandalism, noted no ransom demands, and called it a possible extortion plot or the act of a very sick person. Todd died in a 1958 plane crash near Grants New Mexico.
The United States posted its smallest May trade deficit of 1977 at 12 billion dollars as oil imports fell 17 percent. Exports rose 4 percent to 10.4 billion while imports declined to 11.6 billion, shaping the year’s weak balance amid rising concern over the year end figure. Oil imports stood at 3.1 billion in May, slightly below April.
