Plane Crash Near Priest River Injures Two

A light plane crash near Merritt Bros. Lumber Co. across the river from Priest River injured two men Saturday after takeoff. Leland Chase 47 of Coeur d'Alene suffered serious back injuries and remained in a Spokane hospital. Larry Byers 25 of Priest River had minor injuries.

BCEA Warns Teachers Not to Sign 1975 Contracts

Bonner County teachers were advised not to sign their 1975-76 contracts sent Friday amid a court fight over the school board’s authority. Idaho Education Association’s Joe Allen says the board acted without good faith negotiations and offered a 4 percent salary increase on a take it or leave it basis as the district court case proceeds.

Grand Jury In Session Reconvenes On Hofmeister Case

The grand jury reconvened to probe the homicide of June Hofmeister in a wrecked pickup. It was learned that two out-of-state subpoenas had not been honored before last week’s recess, but no update on settlement was available today.

Girl Hurt in Two Vehicle Crash Near Kootenai

Seven year old Francine Hebert of Mullan remained in Sacred Heart Hospital Spokane with facial lacerations and a fractured nose after a Sunday crash near Kootenai. Hazel M. Hamann 48 of Kootenai was turning from State Highway 200 onto Crandall Rd when Patrick H J OBrien 69 of Bonners Ferry attempted to pass a braking Hamann, causing collision. Deficient equipment cited as cause. Hamann treated and released. Others injured included James Poulton 19 and Colleen McNulty 18 in a separate incident. inattention listed as cause. Sheriff Robert Wilcox noted only the right tail light active during the turn.

County probation officers urged to replace Welfare services

Idaho Judicial Council heard Friday proposals for counties to hire probation officers to take over juvenile and offender supervision from Health and Welfare. Sandpoint Police Chief Dick Abbott argued county officers could curb repeat offenses, citing frequent juvenile arrests and weak parental follow through. Welfare officials defended current system, while council members noted staffing and communication issues but praised local services as high quality.

Youth Charged In Weapon Assault Case

A 13-year-old juvenile on probation in Montana faces assault with a deadly weapon charge after allegedly pulling a knife on a 21-year-old housewife last Thursday. The woman pushed the youth down stairs and he fled on a bicycle. Det. Chuck Bastian said the youth will likely be returned to Montana and stayed in a local foster home.
