Rivers Hit Record High Flows As Floods Reach Idaho Towns

The U S Weather Service reports the Salmon Payette and Big Wood rivers swelling from rapid snowmelt. Riggins sees the Salmon rise about a foot in 24 hours with floods threatening Salmon, Riggins, and Lowman. Two drownings reported near Riggins as dikes and road closures stabilize key routes. The Salmon records 8.60 feet, surpassing 1956, while the Big Wood and South Fork Payette also rise with several communities on alert.

Open Burning Ban Issued in Sandpoint

Sandpoint Fire Chief Wade Brown banned all open burning due to hot dry weather. Written permits may be issued at the fire station if weather permits, though few are expected. No incidents have been reported so far.

Peak inflow last week was about 90 000 cubic feet per second against an outflow of 88 600 cfs.

Ponderay Man Shot By Wife

A Ponderay man in satisfactory condition at Bonner General Hospital after his wife Linda Harbison 26 shot him twice with a .22 caliber pistol following a domestic dispute. Durell Harbison 27 told officers he was slapped during the fight and that his wife fired as he bathed. She is jailed on assault with a deadly weapon charge.

Vermeer Installed as Bonner County Engineer

Louis Vermeer 37 sworn in as Bonner County Engineer by Board chair Jack Popplewell. He arrives from Concord California to draft a county building code with Planning Coordinator Bill Powers, aiming to meet flood insurance needs while adapting Idaho Uniform Building Code. Vermeer and his wife Jackie have two children and praise North Idaho.
