Fish Killed In Chemical Spill Near Cliff Creek
A spill from a Milwaukee Railroad derailment dumped 16 000 gallons of caustic soda and 10 000 gallons of aluminum sulfate into Cliff Creek near the Idaho Montana border. Biologist Bill Goodnight reports dead fish as far as 4.5 miles downstream with at least one live fish under four miles away.

Two more candidates filed for District 3 commissioner raising the slate to nine contenders. Democrats Robert E. Wooden and James C. Osman of Sandpoint joined seven Democrats and two Republicans in the August 6 primary. Republican Conrad J. Balch became the third candidate for county assessor. Prosecuting Attorney Daniel P. Featherston seeks reelection and is unopposed. Republican Dale G. Coffelt is unopposed for coroner, after Buck Nelson’s resignation. Glen A. Ford filed as Democrat precinct committeeman for Hope. Lake Pend Oreille sign to replace Lake Missoula marker
Special assistant to Governor Cecil D. Andrus R J Bruning said a misleading sign on Highway 200 east of Sandpoint will be removed and replaced this summer. The Lake Missoula heading will be changed to Lake Pend Oreille and the legend revised by Merle Wells of the State Historical Department after errors were found.

County Commissioner Jim Brockway remained stable and resting comfortably at Bonner General Hospital after collapsing on a boat deck yesterday afternoon. Dr George Beck said tests are ongoing to determine the cause but ruled out a heart attack. A scheduled Waterways event is affected.

Woman Faces Forgery Charge In Sandpoint Court
Shelley Birum of 1413 Spruce was charged May 30 in District Court with two counts of forgery for writing checks with forged signatures to a fictitious person and cashing them. Christine Erickson, believed fictitious, cashed $13.50 at Economy Grocery and Market and $134.50 at North Idaho Warehouse Market.
