SCS Seeks Federal Funds for Local Chamber and Trail Projects

The Soil Conservation Service seeks a Title X grant to back a Chamber of Commerce office, a mini park, and a three mile bicycle and hiking path along Sand Creek north of town. If funded, up to 40 jobs could be created this summer with 80 percent of labor from unemployment rolls.

Sandpoint pulp mill site rejected by Pack River Company

Jim Brown, chairman of the Pack River Company, says Sandpoint area is not under consideration for a 300 tpd pulp mill due to insufficient raw materials and high transportation costs. A new site outside north Idaho is being pursued, with logistics as the main factor.

Overwhelming Support Found for Kindergarten in Bonner County

A Bonner County kindergarten survey shows 539 of 643 responses in favor. Ruth Wall reports most support comes from parents of preschool children and areas include Sagle Clark Fork Priest River Northside Sandpoint. The district board votes next Tuesday with potential opposition from two trustees. About 82,000 funding would come from the state foundation if requested. unneeded funds revert to the state general fund.

Grand Jury Reconvenes Next Week in Hofmeister Case

The special prosecutor said the 16 member grand jury will reconvene June 11 to continue the Hofmeister homicide probe. Boise attorney Thomas Frost noted no other matters require attention, and the jury was empaneled April 7 by order of Judge Dar Cogswell.

Pend Oreille Lake Levels Expected to Reach 2060 Feet

The Army Corps reports Pend Oreille Lake will rise 3.5 feet by June 9 reaching about 2060 feet. Albeni Falls Dam outflow reduced May 2 to drain Cusick Flats. inflows rise, dam at free flow by June 2. Monday elevation 2056.9 feet with inflow around 63 000 cfs, expected near 87 000 cfs by June 9.

Lions Club Plans Three Day Sandpoint July Fourth Event

The Sand point Lions Club hosts the 20th annual Fourth of July with a Kid's Parade at 9 30 a.m. Grand Parade at 10 30 a.m. Kid events at City Beach 1 p.m. and stock car racing at Panhandle Raceway Colburn. A Variety Show at Memorial Field 7 p.m. features a riffled Ford Pinto giveaway at $1 per ticket. Friday fireworks cap the night with Saturday boxing street dance and Sunday racing and a Junior Rodeo at Bonner County Fairgrounds arena.
