A county study at the Bonner County Courthouse shows new homes rising to about 150 annually, concentrated in central areas. Bill Marsh, a CETA worker, tracks building permits from 1970 to 1974, noting actual construction often outpaces permits.
Boise state officials urged the Transportation Board to reverse its ban on bicycles and other slow moving vehicles on Interstates. Highway chief Dean Tisdale and traffic supervisor Jim Pline pressed for a rescission with a draft policy due Friday, noting safety and flow benefits on the Interstate.
Idaho traffic accidents rose this April with 1,372 crashes and 16 fatalities, compared to 1,289 crashes and 18 deaths a year earlier. State Traffic Safety Commission Director Pat Ehrlich noted the higher crash total but fewer fatalities.
In Idaho the Operation Boobytrap campaign by insurance groups reported nearly 1500 roadside hazards found by 100 inspectors across 41 counties. They covered over 3700 miles inspecting guardrails signs and culverts and will present findings in Boise to the Idaho Transportation Department via Harry Walrath.
Continental Baking Co and United Press International group sue six leading sugar refiners for alleged price fixing. The actions name Great Western Sugar, Holly Sugar, Californian and Hawaiian Sugar, American Crystal, Amalgamated Sugar, and Consolidated Foods, seeking triple damages. House committee schedules July hearings on reviving sugar supports and marketing controls amid price volatility and fears for domestic growers.
United Press International reports at Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho two whooper crane chicks hatched from eggs transferred from Canada. The Sandhill cranes serve as foster parents to help establish a new migration for endangered whoopers, with nest checks confirming the hatch and ongoing tracking by researchers.
