Boat Rides Away With Children After Collision at Bridge

A Spokane man Chad Johnson and his two children Charlene and Gavin were aboard a small boat that struck a bridge piling on the Pend Oreille River near Weencoe at 10 30 p m. The unmanned craft carried the children to shore while Johnson clung to a piling until rescued. Rescuers later saved the children and Johnson at the scene and all were checked and released from Bonner General Hospital.

4-H Events Set Thurs and Friday at Fairgrounds

Raynold D. Davis Extension Agricultural Agent announces 4-H Horse Clinics at the fair grounds on Thursday July 30 starting at 9:00 a.m. Carol McLean leads horse showing and halter classes with equitation sessions to follow. Bring a sack lunch and drinks are provided by Washington Water Power. Friday July 31 features 4-H Rabbit Day starting at 2:00 p.m. at Sandpoint fairgrounds.

Beach To See Hydroplanes At Sandpoint Beach

A two day summer highlight at Sandpoint City Beach on August 8 and 9 features hydroplane races on Lake Pend Oreille. Dieter de Haan says entrants from three states and Canada will compete across five classes with warm ups at 10 a.m. and races at noon. A public smorgasbord dinner is planned Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Girl Hitchhikes With Seven Dogs

Lucy Morgan, 20, travels with seven nursing puppies after leaving California with her husband. She sells a pup at Cedar and Fourth Avenue to fund a ride back to California, while hitchhiking with eight dogs proves difficult. Her husband left for California to seek work to send money, and Lucy continues with a knapsack, sign, and bare feet.

Two Dump Plans Circulate For Bonner County

Bonner County Health Department reports two private proposals for county disposal sites. A Hope-Clark Fork firm studies two sites near Trestle Creek and north of Clark Fork meeting county standards. A Spirit Lake group proposes a county wide privately managed system with dumping sites and municipal rubbish pickup.

KHO Crew to Visit Bonner Communities

Spokane station KHQ Channel 6 will send its Community Close-Up crew to Priest River at 10 30 a m and Sand Point at 1 p m on July 30 with Bob Briley as narrator. Briley will speak with residents and local officials about problems and potentialities in the two Bonner County towns.

Final swimming lesson session opens August 3

Notice announces the third and final session of swimming lessons starting August 3 at Sandpoint City Beach. Deadline to enroll is August 2 and applications are accepted seven days a week. Contact any lifeguard on duty for details.

Absentee ballots available for August 4 nominating election

Doris L. Kenney County Clerk announces absentee ballots for the August 4 nominating election. Voters absent on election day may vote in the courthouse office weekdays 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and August 1 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Deadline is August 3 at 5 pm for absentee voting. Registration is open with 37 registrars. eligible applicants must be citizens with six months in state and 30 days in county.
