Idaho welfare officials report families on aid can stretch purchasing power by about 20 percent by buying full food stamp allotments below value. Medicaid reduces medical costs, easing financial strain amid inflation. many grants lag behind rising prices.
Preservationists clashed with dam builders at a House subcommittee hearing on the Middle Snake River canyon. Rep. Ullman urged a law to permanently preserve Hell’s Canyon. Rep. Symms favored further study and a four year delay on dam decisions. Witnesses supported prohibition on dams with agency options to protect the area. Continued on Page Two.
Mrs. June Darlene Hofmeister 41 wife of Everett Hofmeister a Sandpoint attorney died when her pickup went off the Schweitzer cutoff road just north of Sandpoint rolling down a steep embankment. Time of the 2 a.m. accident not yet fixed. She was alone. five children named Lynn Colleen Craig Gail and Eric.
Samowen campground will close from July 18 to 23 for loop road paving. U S Forest Service assistant ranger Merrill Davis of Sandpoint notes work aligns with Samonen Peninsula paving this week by Bonner County crews.

Idaho candidates pressed for broader study of the Middle Snake River uses at a Washington DC hearing. Lieutenant Governor Jack Murphy urged national protection for the river’s lower stretch, while Vernon Ravenscroft urged more studies on upstream development and recreation. Other speakers questioned state legal costs and supported local kindergarten expansion.
Two Washington men were fined 175 each for possessing a big game bear out of season following Monday action in First District Court. Also on Monday Peter Bergan of Sandpoint received three years probation for involuntary manslaughter from a winter motorcycle crash. Ricky L Jackson got five years with jurisdiction retained for 120 days for first degree burglary. Baroni and Chapot earned two years probation plus jail and fines for controlled substance violations.
