Governor Don Samuelson defended his veto of HB-304 at a Caldwell Kiwanis meeting saying the veto did not harm local government. He noted legislators passed safeguards to prevent tax hikes and rejected repeal without offering alternatives for heavily burdened Idaho taxpayers.
Coeur d Alene Days officials announce the Diamond Cup miniature radio controlled boat races set for July 18 and 19 at the old U S 95 bridge site over the Spokane River near the new bridge. About 100 boats from Seattle Spokane Tacoma Portland and California are entered. The scale models reach speeds over 50 miles per hour as operators steer from shore with sensitive remotes.

Two Sandpoint women Elisabeth Massing and Cindy Howland, both of Sandpoint, were arrested in Priest River on possession of a dangerous drug under new laws. The arrest, first of its kind in Bonner County, involved multiple agencies and a large drug quantity pending chemical analysis. Bonds set at 5000 dollars. arraignment reported.
A three day continuing education program in conservation studies is set for Sept 14 16 at Redfish Lake in the Stanley Basin Idaho. It is the second convocation for Idaho women sponsored by the Idaho State Federation of Garden Clubs and the Idaho Federation of Women’s Clubs.
The Bonner County Commissioners set a special meeting for Thursday July 16 at 8 00 p m in the County Courthouse to hear protests about abandoning Popsickle Road Idaho Highways District Engineer E M Harding said the highway department can provide 40000 in funds to aid a new road linking Schweitzer Basin but only if Popsickle Road is not abandoned due to new U S 95 and 2 construction at Sandpoint One resident on Popsickle Road sought the hearing to voice concerns and ensure stakeholders are heard
The Public Schools Legislative Committee elected Dr. J. P. Mungon of Sandpoint as chairman and Byron Johnson of Boise as vice-chairman. Appointed by Superintendent D. F. Engelking and approved by the State Board of Education, the group will study Idaho education needs with goals and present recommendations to the Board of Education in November for the 41st Idaho Legislature session. Engelking cautioned it will not be a rubber stamp and highlighted tight state funding and potential shifts across government areas.
