Nixon Proposes EPA and NOAA to Oversee Ocean Pollution

President Nixon unveiled plans to create the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to consolidate pollution controls and coordinate oceanic research. The EPA would unify federal pollution programs with a $1.4 billion budget and 5,650 staff, consolidating duties from Interior HEW and other agencies. The reorganization targets tighter pollution control and integrated climate-ocean studies, to take effect within 60 days unless Congress acts.

Washington officials announce a government funded effort to test a self destructing DDT variant that reduces environmental pollution by breaking into less toxic residues. The Aerojet General Corp. developed a catalytic agent under a 135000 dollar contract to lower DDT toxicity to about ten percent.

Body Found Near Post Falls After Drowning Incident

The body of 19 year old William W Geistwhite from Spokane was recovered from the Spokane River two miles west of Post Falls. He had been swimming with friends when he called for help and his rescuers were unable to save him as the current pulled him under.

Hammer Kills Two in San Gabriel Family Tragedy

In San Gabriel California a killer with a claw hammer fatally beat a 10 year old boy Kim Senff and his grandmother Mrs W E Chapman then set fire to their one story home. Three other family members were critically injured. A police officer found the fire and firefighters located the bodies. A claw hammer and gasoline can were found at the scene. The motive remains unknown. The attack may be linked to a separate beating of Lloyd Walters 87 in Rosemead.

Golf Tourney Goes Sunday at Elks Course

The second half of an invitation home and home golf tournament will be played this Sunday. Wallace men’s club competes against Sandpoint at the Elks course. Local golfers wishing to participate should sign up at the club house.

Forester Promotes National Forest Recreation Permits

Paul Barker of Kaniksu National Forest urges the public to buy National Forest Recreation Permits from the Supervisor's Office in Sandpoint or district ranger offices. The $7 permit covers designated facilities nationwide and is honored by the Interior Department. Daily permits remain available for nonannual users. Revenue supports outdoor recreation through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
