A Sandpoint man, Ed Eitzman Jr., reported a bear roaming the alley behind his home at 1405 Pine on Tuesday evening. The bear moved toward the woods just as authorities arrived to contain the sighting.

Forest Fires Reported Here in Sandpoint Area
Three lightning caused fires and one man caused blaze have been battled by the Sandpoint Ranger District. The largest fire, a three acre lightning blaze at Green Bay on Pend Oreille Lake, was controlled by 20 men and aerial retardants. Seven Sandpoint personnel and 31 Panhandle National Forest staff are on duty in Arizona and New Mexico as crews are drawn from other areas in a severe fire season.

Two Washington Men Arrested for Drug Possession
Two Washington men were arrested here Tuesday by city police and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Richard Alan West, 22, of Shelton, and William Norman Yapp, 23, of Spokane, were arrested and held on $300 bond.

Fourth of July Grand Parade Entry Deadline Set

Ben Longbottom Transfers to Hamilton Store
Ben Longbottom, manager of the Anthony's store in Sandpoint, will transfer to the Hamilton Montana branch effective July 15. He has led the Sandpoint store for eight years and calls the move bittersweet, returning to where he began his Anthony's career and previously managing the Hamilton location. Longbottom, a past Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce president and former traffic safety committee chairman, notes the move as one of few transfers he would accept. He and his wife Beverly have three children.
