The badly decomposed body of 54 year old June Woefel was found in her Kaniksu Motel room in Sandpoint nine days after death. A friend located the body after the victim’s daughter reported her mother failed to attend a scheduled visit in Troy Montana on January 9.
A special meeting of Sandpoint retail merchants is set for Thursday January 20 at noon at the Pastime to discuss a proposal for a downtown check alert system and a Courtesy Program in light of new criminal code rulings on bad checks. All merchants are urged to attend.
Secretary Romney approves a $1.2 million Model Cities contract for Boise covering year two of a five year plan. Ten new projects join 24 ongoing activities with continued HUD support alongside EH, Labor, Health and Welfare and OEO programs.
United Press International reports Schweitzer Basin near Sandpoint Idaho records 27 degrees at 7 30 a m with clear to partly cloudy windy conditions. Officials unsure which lifts will operate due to wind though skiing is excellent and the area is open daily.
George Weikert 27 was arrested Friday in Bonner County on possession of an untagged deer. He appeared before Magistrate Ralph Mills and received a seven day sentence after being apprehended with the deer in the Priest River area by a Fish and Game officer.
Two Sandpoint men were injured Saturday when a van slid on icy pavement at the north end of the Long Bridge on U S 95. Ralph M. Sletager remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Bonner General Hospital. Randy Lee James and James E B Davis sustained minor injuries. Davis reported trying to hit a guard rail but could not avoid the collision.
SANDPOINT Idaho. Schweitzer Basin ski area aims to operate at 3200 skiers per hour once chairlifts repaired. No 6 chairlift opened Sunday. The 6950 foot lift rises about 1600 feet and links with chairlift five. Work shifts to No 2 lift after avalanche damage last month. Area to have one of Pacific Northwest?s largest capacities.
Virgil R. Montgomery 27 and his brother were charged with burglary and bonded out at $2500 each. They are due in court January 20 at 1 30 p.m. after a Priest River search yielded allegedly stolen items confiscated by Bonner County Sheriff's Department.
Idaho lawmakers debated a Fish and Game bill to ban rifles and bows from snow machines in hunting areas. Rep. E V McHan warned snowmobilers with cameras threaten deer and elk herds by spooking animals and harming forage. A subcommittee was formed to split the bill and study firearm control separately.
