Andrus Proposes 149.2 Million Budget With Tax Hikes

Governor Cecil Andrus unveiled a 149.2 million dollar general fund budget for the next year. He backed income sales and cigarette tax increases to balance the plan and urged highway funding, school aid up 11.6 million dollars, and reduced property tax millage for schools. He also sought 29.9 million for state colleges and 1.405 million for junior colleges, with continued support to raise junior college aid to forty percent.

REA Program Underway In Bonner County

Royden Zenner county executive director says the Bonner County Development Group and ASCS committee have selected 1972 Rural Environmental Assistance Program practices. The program seeks to prevent soil water and air pollution with forestry and natural resource preservation priorities. In 1971 REAP cost shares totaled 13387 dollars with 1106 acres seeded 4 acres forest tree planting 93 acres brush removal 6 wells for livestock water 1 water reservoir 7 acres forestry improvement 1 sod waterway 1 reorganized irrigation system and 1 animal waste facility. The 1971 program closed and remaining payments wait on state funds.

Seized Items Returned To P R Brothers

Bonner County deputies plan to return most of about 2000 dollars worth of seized items today to Priest River brothers James Montgomery and Virgil Montgomery who face burglary charges. Items not yet identified remain in sheriff custody as evidence. Identified belongings are already claimed by their owners.

Torch Club Door To Door Campaign Aims To Light Up Safely

Torch Club members plan a day long door to door drive in Sandpoint to promote two inexpensive lighting devices supplied by Pacific Power and Light Co. The program supports home burglary deterrence by lighting when occupants are away and is part of a city wide safety week proclaimed by Mayor Floyd Gray.

Pat McCrum announces the annual Radio Auction to benefit the March of Dimes on January 24 to 26 from 7 to 10 p m at the Sandpoint Elks Club. Beta Sigma Phi chapters sponsor. proceeds go to the March of Dimes Drive with local merchants and bidders sought.

Cd A Suspect Held Here In Lieu Of Bond

A Coeur d Alene man, David R. Johnson, 19, arrested Tuesday night in Coeur d Alene on a Bonner County auto theft warrant, was returned to Bonner County Thursday. He was arraigned in Magistrate's Court and sentenced to bond set at 1000 dollars. He remains in custody in lieu of bond.
