Unemployment Rises Sharply in January 1974

UPI reports January unemployment climbed from 4.8 to 5.2 percent, adding 370000 jobless to a total of 4.7 million as energy shortages and inflation raged. AFL-CIO chief Meany and Senator Proxmire criticized the oratory of President Nixon amid weak employment, especially among blue collar workers in autos.

Blacktail Planning Unit Seeks Public Input

Forest Service invites citizen input on Blacktail Planning Unit between Sandpoint and Bayview from Lake Pend Oreille to U.S. 95. Comments due February 20 1974, at the Sandpoint Ranger Station or P O Box 490. Public meetings in March will discuss tentative alternatives and resource inventories conducted in 1973.

Poor Visibility Blamed In Accident Here

Snow reduced visibility at the intersection of U S 95 and Highway 200 north of Sandpoint tied to a three vehicle crash Thursday afternoon. Lehman County deputy Timblin reported June Hofmeister 40 of Sandpoint and William Gordon 49 of Sandpoint drove a southbound car and a northbound Lola Balson 38 of Samuels drove another vehicle. The Hofmeister car rear ended by the truck and then struck Balson. no injuries reported.

Missing Bridge Buried by Flood Waters near St. Maries

Disaster coordinator Gordon Leuty of Benewah County reports a 50 foot all steel bridge swept away by last month’s flood on the St. Joe River. The bridge was sighted Jan 16 but vanished by Jan 17 with ice jams likely moving it downstream and under water about 150 yards away.

Idaho lawmakers drop disaster loan fund bill amid criticism

Democrats lead removal of a proposed 3.5 million disaster loan fund for waterlogged northern Idaho counties. The bill would have given four legislators control over money, drawing opposition from Rep. Bruce Sweeney and others who warned of constitutional issues and endless revolving credits. A one time appropriation via the Board of Examiners is urged to aid cleanup with federal reimbursement planned.

SBA Offering Flood Loans in Northwest Major Disaster

The Small Business Administration announces low interest loans for flood victims in northwest areas designated a major disaster by President Nixon. Regional director Daniel B. Ward says loans help restore homes and business property to pre disaster conditions.

Murphy Requests Funds to Aid Expo Policing

Idaho Lt Gov asked the legislature for 150000 in matching funds to boost police for Expo 74 expected tourist influx in Boise. He said local authorities could add 50000 of the roughly 200000 needed and noted no federal funds were available for such an effort.
