Inmates destroyed property and two were stabbed. four days later a fellow inmate was killed. Gov. Andrus formed a special committee amid debate over causes and a faster move to a new prison site.

BN Refutes Amtrak Critics

Burlington Northern chairman Louis W. Menk defends Amtrak amid criticism, saying BN supports the new company and there is a need for government investment to sustain long distance passenger service. He notes BN operates about eleven percent of Amtrak’s mileage and argues railroads cannot profit from passenger trains but justify national support for socially necessary service.

Suit Against Dept Of Ed Dismissed In Private Settlement

Walter Opp had sued the Idaho Education Association for 150000 in the Fourth District Court alleging damage to his construction business. The case was dismissed and settled privately after claims the associations accused him of making statements against a Nampa teacher at a District 131 School Board meeting.

Rupert Boy in Critical Condition After Idaho Collision

An eight year old Rupert boy, Brent Vaughn, is in critical condition at St. Alphonsus Hospital after a two car crash south of Rupert Sunday night. He was airlifted from Minidoka Memorial Hospital. His father Edward Vaughn, 32, and Kenneth Kowtz, 23, both of Rupert, were involved. Kowtz allegedly ran a stop sign. No citations issued.

Andrus Named Man Of Year By Editors

Idaho editor poll selects Gov. Cecil D. Andrus as Idaho Man of the Year for 1971 while Karen ni is Woman of the Year. Andrus inaugurated Jan. 4 as the state’s first Democratic governor in 25 years. Miss Idaho, Herd of Idaho Falls, named first runnerup at Miss America.

Railroad Head Predicts End To Rail Service

B F Biaggini president of Southern Pacific Co. says new government rail corp Antrak should preside over a orderly shrinkage of passenger service. He states there is no market for long distance intercity rail travel and business travelers prefer other modes. He predicts little passenger service by the late 1970s outside the northeast corridor. Biaggini spoke to U S News and World Report.

Schweitzer Basin Ski Report Opens Daily With Clear Conditions

Schweitzer Basin near Sand Point reports 7:30 a.m. temperature at 10 degrees with clear skies. Skiing is very good to excellent on packed snow with three chairlifts and two t bars operating. The area remains open daily.
