Local 2319 seeks 12 percent pay raise and vacation pay in lieu of time off, plus five 24 hour shifts for vacation after one year. City offers 2.1 percent raise and eight hour shifts, no automatic dues deduction, with disputes over vacation timing and budget impact.
Defense attorney William Gilgray III begins the case in the first degree murder trial of Louis Andrew Monroe age 19. The state rested after presenting a taped confession from Monroe to a sheriff’s investigator detailing the killing of his father Lee A. Monroe in Nampa last June 11 and the burial and arson acts. The prosecution aired the tape and called seven witnesses on the first day.
Bonner County School Board of Trustees approved six recommendations to speed property reappraisal including delaying a planned lawsuit and seeking detailed assessor procedures. Other decisions covered building repairs, hiring, and a proposed citizen building funds council after Christmas with a May 1977 levy target.
Local business and residents boosted the Toys For Tots drive with donations totaling $79.60. Pend Oreille Printers gave $100 and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bauer added $25. an anonymous $5 contribution was also received. The Lions invite toy donations at the Sandpoint Fire Department and plan a 7 pm work party at the Lions Den. Contributions may be mailed to Box 4145 Sandpoint or left at Evergreen Ford Don Mitchell Insurance Bi Rite Drug Daily Bee.
Idaho Governor Andrus and Oregon Governor Straub signed to form the Columbia River Fisheries Council at the Pacific Northwest Regional Commission meeting in Boise to coordinate schedules for salmon and steelhead. The advisory body includes state fish and wildlife leaders, tribal representatives, and industry spokesmen. Washington Governor-elect Dixie Lee Ray is to sign later. The council does not supersede existing legal responsibilities. Energy policy options were reviewed including building codes, insulation incentives, urban design, and potential excise taxes to fund conservation programs.
Albert Williams, age 6, was taken to Bonner General Hospital after slipping on a downtown sidewalk Tuesday afternoon. he was later released. Janet Williams of Sandpoint reported a hit‑and‑run on Long Bridge around 9 PM, with a van striking her car from behind and fleeing the scene. she provided a van make and license number to deputies.
Edwin Peterson located the sunken seaplane with sonar and, with diver Bill Jones, raised the craft within six feet of the surface. They plan to install flotation devices and tow it 114 miles to a boat dock near the dam after a seven week-old crash during a demonstration flight that injured the pilot and two passengers.
UPI reports the U S Fish and Wildlife Service probes the deaths of three great blue herons at Newman Lake east of Spokane. The birds are endangered and two were likely shot while a third was caught in a muskrat trap. Federal law prohibits killing herons.
Garden City council votes to ask Ada County to conduct the January 4 recall election for Mayor Ray Eld and Councilwoman Margaret Mockwitz. Officials want county terms before turning over election duties. Mockwitz and Eld have long opposed each other.
