The 44th Idaho Legislature wrapped up its organizational session with Democrats failing to gain a sixth vote on the State Affairs Committee. Senate adjourned after seven hours as members began returning home for the Jan 10 regular session. Swenson named State Affairs chair. Finance and HEW kept 6-4 and 7-3 respectively. Budget hearings start Jan 4 with Joint Revenue and Joint Finance panels set to meet.

Priest River Firemen Quell Hotel Blaze at King's Hotel
Priest River volunteers battled a late night blaze at the King's Hotel 290 Main St starting about 1 a.m. and controlled by 7:30 a.m. Three quarters of the roof and much of the first floor lounge were damaged. No injuries reported. band member cut head. Newport and Priest River departments assisted. 12 firefighters on scene. A second fire at Galen D. Denio residence near Baldy Road was under control by 1:50 a.m. with no injuries.

Primaries Not A Right Supreme Court Rules
The Supreme Court ruled that independent voters have no constitutional right to participate in primaries. The decision, in an unsigned order, affirmed a federal panel upholding Connecticut’s law restricting primaries to party members. The court said the rule protects the integrity of the electoral process and reflects the will of party members. Nathaa Nader and Albert C Snyder challenged the law, arguing denial of a vote at a pivotal stage of the election.

Press Named Airport Manager for Sandpoint Airport

Patrol car light stolen near Connies Cafe
A Sandpoint resident reports that a blue-lens patrol car light was stolen from a deputy’s vehicle while parked near Connies Cafe around 10:30 a.m. Suspects’ vehicle matched a description in the complaint. A beer bottle was thrown at the deputy’s car on Fish Hatchery Road.
Sandpoint to Host $1.5 Million Computer Data Center
Jim Wassen leads plans for a Sandpoint data center on North Boyer Avenue near the airport. The facility aims to coordinate religious activities in the Northwest and provide 7 000 stock reports daily to a national network, with about 20 local employees and a four month build slated for April or May.

VA Expends Money For Benefits In Idaho In 1976
The Veterans Administration spent 76,376,433 dollars in Idaho during fiscal year 1976 for facilities, operations and benefits to veterans and dependents. Harold L. Kuyper, director of the Boise VA regional office, said 1,478,598 dollars were spent in Bonner County. Expenditures included 30,069,102 for veterans compensation and pension, 17,229,795 for readjustment and education payments, and 2,710 for insurance and indemnities. Regional office and hospital operating costs and construction totaled 13,905,631.

Foreign Exchange Students Decorate Trees in Idaho Towns
Foreign students from Germany France Denmark Finland Japan and Holland gathered at Priest River City Hall and Sandpoint Bonner General Hospital to decorate Christmas trees. They spoke of country customs, shared carols, and shared a world buffet before placing a tree donated by Helmer Malm. Three Bonner County students applied to become exchange students next year.
