Idaho lawmakers and county officials debated the Farmers Home Administration programs at a statehouse hearing called by the Andrus administration. County planner Brent Bennett criticized the loans for isolating residents from urban jobs and services, while others praised the program for enabling home ownership.
A young burglar was briefly nabbed at Dub's Drive In near Sandpoint Junior High School last night. Bill Lewis, 64, owner and former assistant police chief, fired a warning shot as the thief, described as long haired in a green army shirt, escaped on foot after being apprehended inside the shop. The thief had entered through a window and stole one pack of cigarettes before fleeing. Police were summoned after the escape.
Two Samuels men were jailed in Bonner County on possession of a controlled substance charges. Lonnie Ray Engels, 19, and Danial Johnson, 20, were stopped by Sandpoint Police after Engels’ car squealed its tires at a stop sign. Officers found marijuana and arrested them. Engels faced inattentive driving citation. Bonds set at 1075 and 1000 dollars respectively.
East Side Road along Priest Lake in north Idaho prompts a fight over who should maintain it. The State Land Board has urged Bonner County to assume duties for the eight mile timbered route used mainly for recreation. County officials seek state upg rades before considering transfer, with a decision possibly a year away.
A public hearing on the sewer sludge lagoon project west of the city is set for 7 30 p m in city hall council chambers. Plans show the lagoon on land next to Gooby s about a mile west of the city and are open for public review at city hall.
The EPA rejects claims it compromised on Bunker Hill sulfur dioxide controls in Kellogg Idaho. EPA insists 96 percent total emission control by 1977 is needed under the Clean Air Act, with 85 percent permanent control and 11 percent from supplementary measures such as inversion shutdowns. The state cites 72 percent permanent control already achieved.
