Bonner County teachers voted to strike after the school board again refused to negotiate salaries and fringe benefits in union contracts. BCEA president Phil DeBoard said the action aims to force broader contract talks and protect student interests.
Public hearing found no opposition to two proposed lagoon sites for storing sludge from Sandpoint's sewage plant. Engineers favor the airport site for economic and environmental reasons. the lagoon would hold up to 150000 cubic feet, with odor reduced and sludge used on hay crops or sold to farmers.
Yakima fruit dealer Wayne Schatz protests Sandpoint monopoly claims after being denied a permit to sell peaches on city property along U S 2 at the north city limits. He says permits sell for 10 dollars in Washington and that Sandpoint won t issue them, prompting plans to move to Coeur d Alene today.
Athol residents plan a large Sunday event under John Howerton with a 12 noon parade featuring 40 floats and 10 categories, a barbecue, auction, kids contests, puppet show, Miss Athol crowning, a dance, and sky divers and WWI plane displays weather permitting. Ron Bair will be grand marshal and Raquel Howerton sponsors the queen title. Proceeds aid local groups using the city owned gym cafeteria.
Sandpoint officials move to obtain federal funds for a storm sewer project. The plan covers 7600 feet of 36 inch sewer from Division Street west to Chuck Slough via Pine and Chestnut Streets. An environmental review record is available for inspection at Sandpoint City Hall. HUD will consider release if no objections arrive by Sept 29.
