Federal rule limits hunters at Kootenai Refuge to steel shot
Idaho officials opposed a federal decision restricting hunters at the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge near Bonners Ferry to steel shot this fall. Director Joseph C. Greenley said lead shot is not a major issue in Idaho, noting only about 2.7 percent of waterfowl examined contained lead shot. The rule allows steel shot at check stations on two refuge access roads.

Pend Oreille Hospital District Sets 101 500 Budget
The Pend Oreille Hospital District approved a 101 500 budget for 1974 funded by a four mill levy within the district. A public hearing in Sandpoint drew no opposition. Acting administrator Curt McEwan said monthly gross business runs 100 000 to 120 000 and the levy supplements about 73 500 in current operations. Bonner General Hospital Inc. owns the facility and will donate it to the district once its mortgage is paid.

Statement Due Next Week In Hofmeister Case
Bonner County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Featherston expects an official statement next Thursday or Friday regarding the July 16 strangulation death of June Darlene Hofmeister the 41 year old Sandpoint wife of former prosecutor Everett Hofmeister. He noted two possible statements depending on investigation results and said state agents and county deputies are working long hours on the case. The autopsy attributed death to strangulation after a head blow and authorities had planned polygraph tests, though Featherston declined to comment on that plan.

Bullet Fired Through Shed at Phillips 66 Plant
Deputies investigated a bullet fired through a shed wall at the Phillips 66 bulk plant north of Sandpoint on U S 95. Sheriff Robert Wilcox said a .22 calibre round may have been used. The bullet penetrated a door and shed walls, leaving fragments later identified as a .22 round.
