Head Start Here Gets Extension in Sandpoint

The North Idaho Head Start Policy Council extended the deadline by one day for volunteers to locate a building for the Sandpoint center. Ray Stone of North Idaho College said an extension was granted at a Coeur d’Alene meeting. If an adequate site is found by tomorrow, the center may open for 20 children this fall. otherwise the year could be dropped.

Car Theft Report Leads to Idaho Arrest

Dennis Shea of Sagle reported a car theft on Monday. The vehicle was stopped on U 95 by Idaho State Police and arrest records list George E. Fishbaugh as the suspect. He was released by the Prosecuting Attorney.

Iron shot required for Kootenai Refuge waterfowl hunts

Refuge Manager Del Pierce says bowing to lead pellet concerns waterfowl hunters at Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge near Bonners Ferry must use iron shot this season. He notes 1974 makes it the only Idaho site banning lead shot for geese and ducks and mentions a federal proposal to extend the ban nationwide in 1976.

Leaders Seek Congress Help on Bypass and Depot Status

Local leaders met with Idaho Congressmen and the State Historical Society to press for a bypass target date and to remove the Burlington Northern depot from the National Register. Dr. Merle Wells explained the register protects all listed and eligible sites and noted the depot remains the state’s only operating one. He will consult the National Advisory Council and map proper channels for bypass progress.

Lions Club Seeks Merchant Support For Panhandle Rodeo

The Sandpoint Lions Club asks local merchants to sponsor the Panhandle Rodeo on Sept 8 and 9. Ads in the program help cover expenses with scales at 15 10 or 5 dollars. Each dollar includes a free child’s ticket.

Survival Trip Death Brings Parents' Suit

Parents of 11 year old Jeffrey Hodgson who died on a survival training course in eastern Idaho filed a $303,033 claim against the state. They seek $150,000 each for loss of their son plus $3,033 in special damages alleging negligence and improper supervision and notice. The claim, filed through Secretary of State Pete Cenarrasa, will go to the Department of Administration and then to the state insurer.
