Lightning Sparks Five Packsaddle Fires In Dry Backcountry

Early Monday a lightning storm caused five small fires in the Packsaddle area south of Lake Perid Oreille. USFS crews were flown by helicopter and retardants dropped to hold each blaze to under a quarter acre, with mop up planned. A separate Antelope area fire near Clark Fork burned 14 acres before halt. A Granite three acre fire was knocked down by a six man Coeur d Alene crew aided by retardant and a bulldozer. Local help aided containment. more fires possible in a long hot dry fall.

Girl Drowns After Seizure In River Near Priest River

A nine year old Spokane Indian girl Coletta Frances Hayes of Wellpinit Va reportedly drowned Sunday afternoon while wading in the Pend Oreille River near Priest River after apparently having a seizure. Deputies said she was the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Hayes.

Sandpoint Teens Cited After Stop Sign Crash

Bill R. Sams, 19, of Sandpoint was cited for failure to stop for a stop sign after his car hit Glen Edward Eich, 45, of Sandpoint at the Boyer and Oak Streets intersection. Eich's vehicle sustained $1,000 in damage while Sams’ car incurred $450.

Charles Eifert of Spokane reported a hit and run at Luby Bay Priest Lake on Sunday. He said another vehicle backed into his car causing $540 in damages.

Freak Accident Claims P R Woman

A Priest River woman identified as Helen R. Cole, 46, was killed when her car dragged her over an embankment on Dry Canyon Road north of LeClerk Creek Road. Mrs Merritt of Nordman was not hurt but another vehicle incident left a woman trapped beneath her car overnight, rescued Monday morning by Forest Service staff and flown to Spokane for treatment.
