Drop Box Problems Plague Bonner County Officials

Bonner County commissioners engineers and Panhandle Health District officials agree drop boxes are a problem though they differ on extent and fixes. Residents misuse boxes by dumping large items and overflowing lids spur mess and animal attraction. Some urge more boxes or public education while a county wide mandatory pickup is debated but deemed impractical due to cost and coverage.

Suspect Charged in Slaying of Osburn Officer in Idaho

Dixon Curley, 23, was charged with first degree murder in Shoshone County for the slaying of Osburn police officer Charles Ashton during a pursuit on Interstate 90. Ashton was shot at close range after stopping a pickup in the wrong lane. Curley was arrested after a field search culminating in a surrender with hands behind his head. Ashton leaves a wife and young daughter.

Calf Scramble Competition Set At Panhandle Rodeo

A three man team named Calf Scramble plans to compete at the Lions Panhandle Rodeo on Sept 11. No farmers or rodeo association members may participate. A calf will be released, teams of three try to wrestle and tie it. Top prize is $50 with no entry fee. Only 12 teams may enter, sign up at city hall and have forms notarized via Tom Demers.

Major Bob Murray, a 1967 retiree with three wars and 10 000 flight hours, credits a Spokane hospital program with Pavlovian conditioning for ending his alcohol use.
