Fatal crash near Lewiston claims 71 year old passenger
Eurie Dazey of Sandpoint died when a station wagon left U S Highway 95 near Lewiston and fell 65 feet after losing brakes at a junction with Highway 195. Eight others were injured including the driver Ophelia Halford and two Halford children. Funeral plans were set at Moon Chapel in Sandpoint.

Sandpoint Police Chief Larry Sterling found a .22 pistol and a blue ten speed bike unaccounted for in the evidence room after taking over in March 1976. Former chief Richard Abbott Brown did not investigate or inform the council, and access to the room was restricted to the chief. The bike and pistol were later unlinked to any case and not reported as stolen or returned.
