Yard sale proceeds aid toy project in Sand Point

Mrs Hook announced a yard sale at 724 N Washington Sand Point to raise funds for toy making supplies. Proceeds will support doll parts paint and materials for a project that provides toys to deserving youngsters at Christmas. Additional donations include tools back to school items skate parts and rummage items.

Turner jailed for embezzling state funds in Idaho case

Fourth District Judge J Ray Durtschi sentenced former Idaho Highway Department Auditor Oliver B Turner to prison for more than 14 years after he was found to have embezzled over 300000 dollars. Turner, represented by Allen Derr, had sought to drop Derr and change pleas on all 19 counts but the court denied the motion. Durtschi stated a prison term would deter others.

Loren D. Book 61 Sandpoint Dies During Open Heart Surgery

Loren D. Book of Sandpoint died during open heart surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital Spokane. Born December 12, 1908 in Iowa, he moved to Sandpoint in 1940 and led as a businessman with the IGA store and Sandpoint Ice & Fuel. Survived by wife Ethel, daughter Mrs Wayne Walker, three grandchildren, sister Irene Dean, and four brothers. Funeral Monday at Moon Funeral Chapels with interment Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Athol Depot Burns in Blaze. Fire Destroys Landmark

A Burlington Northern rail depot in Athol burned to its foundation after a 3 p.m. blaze. Over 30 firefighters from Athol and nearby facilities fought the fire amid a breeze, sparking a roof fire near W. R. Johnson’s home and threatening dry fields. The early 1900s structure, vacant 18 months, left only four chimneys and the stove intact.

Coyote Kills Family Pet Chihuahua in Idaho Incident

Mrs. Ethel McMillan of Highland Flats near Naples Idaho reports a coyote attacked her 2 1/2 pound registered Chihuahua named Honey Baby as it bounded toward a nearby empty deep freeze. The coyote seized the dog twice, dropped it, and disappeared into the woods. Honey Baby died en route to a Bonners Ferry veterinarian.

Sandpoint Camera Club entries due at Haviland & Holzemer

Doug Davis, chairman of the Sandpoint Camera Club, said colored slides for the Bonner County Fair competition must be turned in to Haviland & Holzemer Inc. by tomorrow August 15. The weather note reports Needles California at 110 degrees and Mullan Idaho at 40 degrees.

A wildfire in the Shoshone National Forest northwestern Wyoming burned over 500 acres of timberland today. Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze as flames spread through the forest.

Stamps Rise to 8 Cents Under New Postal Law

President Nixon signed a sweeping postal reform, creating the United States Postal Service to replace the Post Office Department. Stamps will cost 8 cents, the agency gains an 11 member board, bonds for modernization, and workers receive an 8 percent pay raise retroactive to April 18.
