The Forest Service identifies 87 510 roadless acres in Bonner County and 257 420 acres across the Panhandle and urges citizens to attend meetings or submit written comments before September 15.
Palmer, a 35 year old transfer from Nebraska, becomes the newest reporter photographer for Sandpoint Daily Bee and News Bulletin. He moved from Lincoln, Nebraska where he taught English and journalism at a high school for three years. Palmer and his wife Carole plan to return to teaching after their fourth child is born this December. Their sons Christopher Brett and Jason will attend Bonner County schools this fall. Prior to Lincoln he worked two years as a full time photographer for the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette in Phoenix, Arizona.
Delbert Purcell sues Lowell and Gayle Thomas in First District Court for more than $30,000 asking damages and an audit of Kaniksu Lanes Inc. Purcell claims he bought 10 percent of Lucky Lanes assets in June 1976 and that the Thomases excluded him from assets and control since September 1976.
About 50 residents met with state and federal officials to discuss the Oden Bay water system’s capacity crisis. Officials said the nine year old line now serves roughly 140 connected families with 40 awaiting hookups, and the current infrastructure cannot deliver enough water or pressure. A five member committee will hire an engineer to study options including a new filter plant, larger pump, and possibly forming a local improvement district.
The District 82 board moved the plant facilities levy election to September 6 and limited the levy to 15 mills with a yearly cap of 615000 dollars. Priority lists include Sagle Elementary and Priest River High projects with several other remodeling and expansion items. Resignations were accepted for several Sandpoint and Washington area staff and multiple teachers were recommended for the 77 78 year.
The Protect Our Kids fencing project ended last weekend with 880 feet of five foot chain link surrounding the east end of Priest River Elementary School. Local volunteers from Company D 116th Engineering Battalion led by Captain James Flavel installed the fence with support from community benefactors including Stewart's Concrete, Murray's Equipment, Northwest Cable, and Bonner County School District.
Observers can expect a bright Perseids display Thursday and Friday nights with up to 60 meteors per hour from dark country skies. The shower radiates from Perseus in the northeastern sky near Ursa Major, peaking tonight and Friday. The near new moon will aid viewing, with brightness ranging from faint streaks to fireballs as the meteor activity rises through August.
