Local Youth Drowns At Sandpoint Beach

Timothy R. Palmen aged 18 of Sandpoint drowned at City Beach Thursday afternoon while diving from a low water board. Firefighter Dean Raynor recovered the body in about 24 feet of water after a two hour search. Palmen had just graduated from Sandpoint High School.

Fires Sweep Bonner County Prompt Warnings of Season

Fire marshal Willis Jordan warned Bonner County faces a harsh fire season as multiple blazes burned Thursday. The first 0.2 acre yard fire near Sagle started by an electric fence sparked delays for firefighters. A second blaze near Caribou Creek and Selkirk Ridge may have sparked by last week’s lightning. A third fire on Bonnet Top Mountain caused little damage while moss and rock lichens smoked. A pasture fire near the Gooby Road dog pound was blamed on a passing train. A Volkswagen fire at Garfield Bay destroyed the car and threatened a nearby garage before being contained.

Vincent Volkswagen Dies In Fire Beside Garfield Bay

Vincent Volkswagen a 12 year old from Sandpoint died Thursday after an electrical short ignited a fire near his car battery. The blaze consumed the car within minutes and a nearby garage dam and field were saved by a Bird Corporation fire truck from Glengary Bay. Vincent born in West Germany around 1964 65 immigrated to the United States and was handed the car by Donald Moe of Seattle before the boy learned to drive. Memorials may be sent to the Society for the Protection of Bugs and Buses Box 10 Sandpoint.

Sandpoint Woman Charged With Cultivation of Marijuana

Mary Lock, 24, of Sandpoint, was arrested Thursday on a charge of cultivating a controlled substance. She posted a 1500 bond and was released. Police allegedly found two marijuana plants in her apartment, an officer said.

Truck Jackknifes in West Sandpoint Crash

A report from U.S. 2 near Wrencoe Loop seven miles west of Sandpoint states 17 year old Tere Frost of Lewiston allegedly crossed the center line and sideswiped a Mayflower moving van driven westbound by Richard Robinson 30 of Spokane. Frost and two passengers were transported to Bonner General Hospital in good condition. Frost’s Volkswagen was totaled and the van sustained about $1000 damage.

Nepal Forester studies Nepals land inventory with Idaho team

Keshar Man Sthapit a Nepali forester visits Sandpoint Idaho to learn land inventory methods from Gordon Warrington and Karl Krueger. He notes in Nepal erosion from heavy rainfall and deforestation, terracing incentives, and plans to apply new techniques to identify erosion hotspots and improve forest and cropland management.
