Pleads Guilty in Idaho kidnapping and rape case
Eugene R. Hedlund 35 of Priest River changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on two felony charges of second degree kidnapping and rape after a recess during arraignment. He escaped from a hospital, was recaptured in Michigan, extradition waived, and sentencing set for September 7.

Postal Service to Hike Third Class Mail Rates Soon
The U S Postal Service will temporarily raise third class mail rates to the full amount planned over five years. The increase starts Sept 16 and continues until 30 days after the Postal Rate Commission acts. Direct Mail Advertising Association pledges to sue to block the move.

A new swimming class is scheduled for Monday August 16 at Sandpoint City Beach. Students seven and older can register with lifeguards before the date. Parks Superintendent Bob Linsday announced today.

Beach Light Breaks Record For Speed

City Council Hears Bid Requests For Property Use Here
Two bids read for the old experimental farm property drew interest at the Sandpoint City Council meeting. North Idaho Construction Co offered 260 dollars monthly for the full site, while Gerry Thurlow bid 75 dollars monthly for partial agricultural use. The P and E Woodworking lease ends August 15 1971, and the matter goes to the Ways and Means Committee for study. The council also approved use of the old horse barn by the Sandpoint Lions Club until further notice with a 30 day notice clause and authorized downtown sidewalk use for a Cultural Arts and Crafts Show on August 13. The show features regional artists with Spokane St Maries and Bonners Ferry participation, no entry fee, no cash prizes, and is Chamber of Commerce sanctioned.

Sandpoint Chief of Police George Elliot told the city council he prefers Idaho policing after attending FBI National Academy sessions in Lincoln City Oregon. He cited Bay Area seminars by Assistant Chief Brown describing increased violence toward off duty officers and a book published by the Black Panther group under a USDA cover titled How to Butcher a Pig detailing attacks and weapons.
