A Portland area family roped together while descending Mt Hood’s glacier Sunday. Henry B Carson Jr 13 and Clint 12 died, Harry Jr and their mother survived as rescuers airlifted all from the mountain after a 11:30 a.m. accident.
Sandpoint sees fair and hot weather with a high of 95 today and 90 on Tuesday. Lows around 60 tonight. Rain is unlikely through Tuesday with a zero percent chance.
Gov. Cecil D. Andrus and 45 aides begin a two day tour of Idaho timber holdings east of Priest Lake by land and water. Stops include Indian Creek Park and Mosquito Bay. Attending are Attorney General Anthony Park, State Auditor Joe Williams, Supt. D. F. Engelking and Land Commissioner Gordon Trombley.
John R Dodson a 15 year old from Coeur d Alene died after a .22 pistol fired while he accepted a dare. Kootenai County Sheriff Stan Johnson said the death was accidental. Dodson had shown the gun to three companions and believed it unloaded before firing against his head. The incident occurred Saturday in Coeur d Alene Idaho. Linda Stocklen 18 was named Miss Coeur d Alene at a pageant.
The new Southside Water and Sewer District is formed after a Friday election where 62 voting in Bonner County favored the measure and 12 opposed. Two non injury crashes on Shingle Mill Road involve teens Benda and Barney, with officers noting inattentive driving and excessive speed respective to road conditions. Five directors, including Overholzer Kirking Merwin Cochran and Farmin, are elected to set terms from one to six years.
UPI reports BLM crews confined a 1500 acre range fire near Emmett Idaho in tinder dry grass and sage brush after starting around 10 15 p m Sunday. Dispatchers say 51 firefighters worked the lines as two fires were set deliberately and merged as they grew.
Duane Hadley of the Kaniksu National Forest reports the Bull River Fire near Noxon Montana is under control amid mopping up. The 46 acre blaze was contained with skeleton crews and no Indian Hot Shot crews were used as fire danger remains extremely high with ongoing surveillance. Fire crews are being released from final duties tonight.
President Nixon signed a 250 million government guaranteed loan for Lockheed Aircraft and a 1 billion Emergency Employment Act to create up to 150 000 jobs. The bills were signed without ceremony with funds to reach states within three weeks and hiring to begin immediately.
Boise resident F. W. Urry aged 60 died after apparently falling head first into Hayfork Creek near Highway 21 ten miles northeast of Idaho City. Sheriff Williams said Urry slipped while down a steep embankment and was found dead in the creek Saturday.
