Andrus Receives Fowl Suggestions For Grasshoppers

Gov. Cecil D. Andrus receives ideas from supporters about using animals to curb a grasshopper plague in southwestern Idaho. A Pennsylvanian organic farmer proposed guinea hens to control grasshoppers on a 75 acre farm and urged a distress call for birds. A Florida professor suggested seagulls as a possible partner, recalling seagulls used to combat locusts in Utah.

Lightning Starts Bull River Fire

A 60 acre Bull River fire in the Kaniksu National Forest near Noxen Montana is nearly contained with 160 firefighters and six dozers on scene. Fire boss Dallard Johnson of Kaniksu Forest coordinates crews as mop up continues on four other fires in the area. Fortunate weather and steady progress may bring full containment today.

Annual Fish Plant Planned For Mt. Lakes

Regional Fish Biologist Dave Ortman and Bob Cordingly outlined the annual project to transport trout fry to Selkirk area high mountain lakes. About 50 to 60 thousand fish are designated from the Sandpoint Hatchery, with Sunday, August 22 set for the planting. Members supply pack sacks and receive plastic milk cartons holding about 2,000 fry to carry on backcountry treks. Under normal conditions the fry survive about eleven hours in the bag away from sunlight.
