New York stocks rise on renewed Watergate hopes after Nixon disclosure. Dow Jones gains exceed 25 points in early trading as advances outpace declines and Republicans shift stance on impeachment amid a pending White House cabinet meeting.
United Press International reports a 19 percent crime rise in Coeur d Alene amid Expo 74 funding that added eight police officers. Spokane shows a 20 percent jump in the first half of the year over 1973, with purse snatching and larceny major factors and burglary as the second most common crime.
Bonner County Coroner Dale Coffelt says a coroner's inquest into June Hofmeister's July 16 strangulation remains possible if no warrants or conclusive evidence emerge from the statewide homicide investigation. He notes slow progress without physical clues while Dan Featherston reports new leads and continued systematic efforts by a team of deputies and state agents.
Mrs. Martin Callen of Star Route Sagle reports a four month-old Holstein calf was shot in the head between 4 and 6 a.m. Monday. Sheriff Robert Wilcox said the incident is under investigation. Separately, Larry Stevens reports a break-in at Indian Creek Campground with a citizen band radio and an American flag stolen.
Voters turnout in Idaho was light overall with Pocatello reporting steady morning voting ahead of a busy night. Incumbent Rep. Orval Hansen faced George Hansen in a defining contest while Frank Church and other statewide races drew less attention. Polls opened 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with forecasts predicting low turnout, possibly 140 000 to 165 000 of 400 000 eligible voters.
