Voters prepare for a primary election with some uncontested races drawing concern from party leaders over possible write-in candidates. Several purported write-ins are unaware of their status, including Glenn Bandelin who worries no Democrats will face Dan Featherston for prosecuting attorney in the general election.
A cluttered, OCR style TV guide lists multiple stations with scattered show times and titles across morning to late evening. Programs include news, game shows, soaps, westerns, comedies, and sports, though many entries are garbled or partial.
Grace Gertrude Sylvester of Samuels died August 1 at age 87. Born May 11, 1887 in Wisconsin, she married Clarence Sylvester in 1906 in Minneapolis. She moved to the Gold Creek area in 1918. Surviving are two sons, five daughters, 32 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren. Graveside services set for August 6 at Pack River Cemetery.
Primary candidates discuss road leadership and county governance. Cecil Knowles and James C. Osman press full time service and broad supervision, while Henry F. Samuels defends local property owners against higher taxes. Robert E. Wooden promotes fire service and county law enforcement consolidation. The American Telephone and Telegraph Co and its unions halted a 725000 worker nationwide strike by reaching a tentative three year contract. Wages and benefits total about 35.82 percent over the life of the agreement with $3 billion in benefits for 515000 Bell System workers. Local bargaining will finalize issues like grievance procedures and work conditions while ratification follows.
Marianne Brown of Sandpoint has been selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America for 1974 by the General Federation of Women's Clubs. A 27 year old former Sandpoint High School English teacher, she taught five years and led the year book and drill team. Now Mrs Bill Love she is active in 4 H horse show projects cowbells and helped the state judging team. Other candidates are considered for state and national honors.
Richard Aronson, 21, of Spokane faces a first degree burglary charge. Bond set at 5000.
Portland Oregon cattle and calves auctioned with early slaughter sales showing cows 50 to 150 lower, bulls steady to 2.50 higher, cows commercial 23 to 26.50, bulk utility 21.75 to 26.75, cutters 18.50 to 22, bulls 14 to 17 per hundredweight, with heavy price movements across categories.
Multiple weekend traffic incidents reported in Fir County with one injury. Mary G. Hannigan of Sagle, 22, suffered injuries after her northbound car left U.S. 95 near Sandpoint, went airborne, rolled, and she was hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Other crashes involved drivers Marylyn Cork 37 and Katherine Ann Rea 18 near Priest River, Joyce Joan Rinual 43 of Ponderay and Tab L. Anderson 17 of Samuels, and Dedith H. Shorts 22 of Newport rear ended by Curtis Morrison 25 of Metaline Falls in Oldtown.
