Ford to Speak at Expo 74 Environmental Policy Address

Vice President Ford will present a major policy address on environmental issues on August 15 at Expo 74 in Spokane. The event at the Washington State Pavilion Opera House marks the U S viewpoint on the environment and precedes a public tour of the fair. Three jailbreak suspects hunted in Garfield Bay area

Deputies scoured Garfield Bay for three men tied to the July 22 jail break after tips they entered a house there. John Hicken 35 was arrested on an Aspen Colorado warrant for fraud and checks. Suspects Steven Alexander 23 Jesse O Donnelly 22 and William Lee Morgan 29 sought in the case. Morgan used alias William Are. A Datsun and a separate holdup near Clark Fork were reported but not confirmed.

Andrus and Parks Commit To Save Sunshine Initiative

Gov. Cecil Andrus and Attorney General Anthony Parks pledged to fight efforts to quash Idaho's public disclosure initiative before the State Bar Association. Andrus warned of grave consequences if the measure fails due to legal technicalities and cited 28 000 valid signatures. Parks noted opposition and cited a Washington Supreme Court precedent validating similar disclosure efforts.

Church Revises Scout Troop Policy In Race Change

The Mormon Church revised its Boy Scout policy banning blacks from the top leadership post, saying the guideline was not intended to discriminate. A federal hearing on a temporary restraining order followed, with NAACP alleging racial discrimination in Utah. The amendment allows qualified leaders other than the deacon quorum president to lead, applying to Venturer and Explorer programs. The church sponsors 4,424 troops with 97,239 members, about 16 percent of national 14 to 17 year olds.

Firefighters battle Russell Mountain timber fire in Idaho

Fire crews estimated at 200 personnel fought the 90 acre Russell Mountain blaze 15 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Helicopters carried in crews to reach the rugged, remote terrain where the fire began Tuesday morning. officials hoped to contain it by day’s end.

Youth in Critical Condition After Lewiston Crash

A Spirit Lake Idaho youth Rick Johnson 16 remained in critical condition at Deaconess Hospital Spokane after a weekend crash near Lewiston Montana that killed passenger Dawn Willmore 16 of Roy Montana. Two other passengers escaped injury. Johnson had been moved from Fergus County Memorial in Lewiston to Spokane earlier in the week.
