Church urges McGovern to seek alternatives for running mate

Sen. Frank Church of Idaho, a top Democratic vice presidential prospect, says he urged McGovern to consider other candidates. Church would not disclose his suggestions but says McGovern must widen searches to win in big cities and industrial areas. McGovern seeks a successor to Eagleton and a list of potential names includes Muskie Shriver O'Brien. Gary Hart notes that one or two names may be considered. Muskie says he has not talked with McGovern and declines comment on running again.

Arson Suspected in South Poplar Truck Fire

A fire Tuesday in the 500 block of South Poplar damaged a gas tank belonging to Dan Deshon with minor overall damage. A Y report by Officer C. E. Holt notes witnesses saw a young suspect near the scene and used matches found around the truck.

Deputies Nab Three Men Near Old Town After Drug Arrests

Deputies arrested three Spokane men, Daniel Wenzel 20, Donald Menely 20, and Clarence Cunningham 22 from Rathdrum, after a call from Coeur d Alene led officers to Old Town. A loaded 38 caliber pistol, six marijuana bags, and a small amount of mescaline were found. Charges are pending.

Three Inmates Escape To Tavern At Eagle Island Farm

Three inmates from Eagle Island Prison Farm slipped away to buy beer at a nearby tavern. Officials said they were found walking back to the farm shortly after midnight. It was unclear if charges would be filed or if administrative action would cover the incident.

Williams May Move Staff to State Office Building

State Auditor Joe Williams plans to combine his staff in Boise's state office building across from the statehouse. Williams had split staff between the Statehouse and the building but faced opposition from departments.
