Veterans of Foreign Wars leader calls for dissenters to seek citizenship elsewhere. The message accompanies nationwide Loyalty Day plans for May 1, with parades and meetings co sponsored by VFW and other groups in Sandpoint to celebrate flag love and freedom defense.
The search for 86 year old John Pike of Spokane, missing since Sunday after leaving friends to fish at Diamond Lake 14 miles southwest of Newport, continued at daylight. His boat and hat were found near the dock as divers comb the 25 foot deep waters.
Spokane police search today for a polite bandit who held up the Clinic Center Motel on the south side and fled with an undetermined amount of money. Mozella Ap person, the motel manager, said a man about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds in a knee length overcoat entered, tied her to a chair, gagged her, and left after claiming he was sorry to have to do this.
The Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club will meet Tuesday in the Alpine room to finalize plans for Kamloops and Kokanee Week, with the 25th annual observance running from Saturday through May 9. A second meeting on May 5 is noted, as the group prepares for the two month activity period.
The American Legion unit presented commendations to the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department led by Sheriff Bob Wilcox and deputies, Sandpoint Police Department led by Chief George Elliot, Sandpoint Fire Department led by Chief Art Chubb, Idaho State Police, and North Idaho Security Police. Sheriff Wilcox was honored as Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer. Presenters included J A Naccarato, Herbert Johnson, and Lawrence Barker.
The Bonner County Board of Trustees held a special meeting to set next year’s budget. After heated exchanges over adding 21 500 for employee insurance 14 500 for improvements and 50 000 for buses the board approved a 2 200 200 budget including health insurance for all full time employees. An executive workshop is set for tomorrow with the full budget to be presented May 5 at the junior high auditorium. The next regular meeting is May 12.
